New good harvests resonant controller IC with PFC for power source and lighting drivers
Efficient and cost-effective controller IC solutions enable optimized LED lighting solutions. Infineon Technologies introduces the 2nd generation ICL5102 resonant controller IC designed specifically for power source and lighting drivers. Main target applications are LED drivers for professional and industrial lighting, and street lighting. The controller IC can also be used for offline AC-DC power supplies and Hd tvs.
The ICL5102 integrates Power Factor Correction (PFC) and half-bridge (HB) controllers in a DSO-16 package. It supports universal input voltages which range from 70 VAC to 325 VAC, and has now an equivalent wide output range. The minimum number of external components are necessary to configure and support this controller IC. All parameters are placed by resistors. The ICL5012 supports fast startup under 500 ms well below 100 A. The industry-leading PFC is larger than 99 percent and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is not as much as 3.5 %. The controller has around 94 percent efficiency by resonant topology. The active burst mode for low standby consumes fewer than 300 mW. An enable/disable function supports dimming.
The PFC controller features brownout detection, adjustable THD for light load operation, and power factor correction. Due to high accuracy of BUS voltage sensing, only four PINs are crucial for PFC action. The resonant HB controller features a fully integrated 650 V high-side driver utilizing an internal coreless transformer with self-adaptive dead time ranging between 250 ns and 750 ns, as well as operating frequency approximately 500 kHz. It may detect overload, short circuit, BUS, HB or output under and also over voltage together with over temperature. An internal capacitive mode regulator prevents operation in capacitive mode. All protection features use AUTO restart (No Latch).
